Never & Forever
My six year old and I were doing our good nights and he asked when I would get my real eye back and see again. I explained, I will NEVER. Mommy will FOREVER have my fake eye and NEVER be able to see out of that eye again. I continued…instead I get to do cool things like pop it out, turn it upside down and make funny faces but it will NEVER see.
NEVER and FOREVER are really hard words for anyone to understand but even harder and maybe not even possible for a six year old.
I could see his mind spinning – maybe he’ll understand someday I thought…or maybe NEVER and FOREVER are too hard for reality and it’s easier to just think ‘maybe someday’ and live with him in that world – that’s a lot more comforting for sure.
BUT…. what I know is for sure – FOREVER – every November – the rest of my life I will plan to educate and advocate for dilated eye exams to all. It’s national #EyeGetDilated awareness month.
